In an era of “fast” zombies and “infected,” this was a refreshing return to the “real” undead. These are among the slowest undead I have seen, except for the last couple inches of their attack. Oddly, this made them more frightening. Too many movies rely on make up to create scary monsters. This movie relied on acting. These undead are also silent, which added to their horror.

Another strength of this movie is the siege that’s not a siege. Undead movies too often are about humans trapped in a house/mall/school/what-have-you, surrounded by the undead. The Dead, by contrast, is a road movie. Two men, enemies at war, allies against a greater enemy, are trying to find their families. They recognize the danger of getting trapped by hordes of the undead, so they keep moving. Often they do not expend ammunition or energy killing an undead person who can simply be avoided.

Another strength of this movie is the characters’ willingness to loot the corpses. Too often the living kill the undead and flee. These men take time to retrieve weapons, water, equipment, etc. from the corpses. I wanted to stand up and cheer.

The movie ended with a twist I should have seen coming, but I didn’t. It wasn’t a “Bruce Willis has been dead all along,” kind of twist, but just when I was preparing to hate the end of the movie, the writers or the director or someone saved it for me. The ending was as “happy” as one could hope in such a situation.

I rate this movie 5/5.

What a crap. Never seen such a bad piece of Animated Movie. Bad paintings and a horrible Narration made this Thing not worth called a “Zombie-Movie”.

I#ll never forget the day ive seen D&B in my suburbian Cinema.
Brilliant FX, a fascinating story and thrillinh atmosphere. This is one of nearly 20 Movies that made me a Horror-Fan!

15 minutes in and the most troubling part of this movie is the slightly transvestite in appearance barmaid. That, and the 2 jazzband clips and the extended session by the belly dancer. All of a sudden there’s potential, the new bride has allowed her husband to bring home a stranded belly dancer on their wedding night! The new groom just doesn’t twig that the belly dancer is coming on to him “Jeez, it’s so hot today, I’m going for a shower…”. Lost all sympathy for him now because of the way he just spoke with the plantation worker (and outside of the slave rooms too!). So Jonas died from a Voodoo curse imposed on him by his fiance who sat with him all the time he was withering and dying – sounds like marriage to me. He’s a very smart zombie is our Jonas, he’d fit right in with that jazz ensemble from earlier with that dinner suit. Aww the newlyweds can’t sleep, what with all that banging. Not bad make up for the very early 60’s – although Jonas does look a lot like Mikey Finn from T-Rex. That bride has got a yell that can crack eggs! What ‘is’ George’s job? – He’s always standing by that pipe? I’d sack him, he’s probably having a sly smoke while looking at that picture of the half naked woman. Bella Bella?! Her parents were obviously imaginative. About time too John – “I’m going to take you upstairs and give you my gun” – well it is technically still your honeymoon. Woah there Jonah, that was some smart ‘under the staircase hiding’ from an undead someone. Loving the way the voodoo drummer isn’t drumming out a rhythm to the ceremony, but more in reaction to what’s going on around him. He belongs in that jazz band for sure. To right John, sling that drum out the window, it’s distracting you from your punching. And slapping. Invisible entry wound?! That sun came up pretty quickly, it was pitch black only seconds before. Just another routine police write up for the boys in blue. So after all that, you don’t want the plantation after all?

Why is this movie listed in a zombie movie? I just watched it today, its a good movie, just no (dead) zombies in it, not even brain washing (human) zombies, they are rat people. Really, they are RAT people, with rat face! I wish this movie was about zombies, but they are not
